I created this part of my website for those who are interested in Scandinavia.
Especially if you are considering going there in winter!
Together with a friend of mine, Erik Birkhoff, I traveled trough Scandinavia in january 2003.
We visited several cities and had a great time.
Personally I can't wait to go back!
You will find a full journal of a 9-day-trip by train, together with
pictures,
suggestions & tips and links.
If you have any questions afterwards, feel free to send me an email!
Why would someone want to travel in Scandinavia in the beginning of January?
Personally I have always been curious what Scandinavia was like... The scenery, the people, cities, the dark winters, etc. What better way is there to experience it, than to actually live there for a while. It is therefore that I decided to do a
6 month exchange in Tampere, the second largest city in Finland.
Of course, Finland is not all there is to see in Scandinavia, so I was happy to find out that I had a two-week holiday right after my exchange. Indeed, the first two weeks of January 2003!
Luckily, one of my Dutch friends, Erik Birkhoff, felt like traveling too... A bit strange maybe, considering the average temperature of - 15 degrees Celsius during those two weeks! We discovered that there was a special train ticket (Scanrail card) available, allowing you to travel trough scandinavia by train for 10 days (or more). So, we decided to try and visit as many cities as possible. Sightseeing during the day, traveling at night, to avoid expensive hostels. |
Okay, maybe we were a bit too optimistic, but click here to view our original Plan

| 3rd of January | Stockholm |
Sweden |
Stockholm, the city where I would meet my friend, arriving from the Netherlands, and the start of our journey! I read somewhere that Stockholm is called Venice of Scandinavia' well, now I can understand! For those of you who don't intend to read the whole story: VISIT IT, it's a great city!
Two back-packs were reunited at Stockholm central station, after which we headed for our hostel. It was only three o'clock, and already it was getting dark.
The hostel was a nice place to stay, but we were forced to sleep in different rooms, since it was almost fully booked. A funny thing for us to see, was that everybody had to leave their shoes at the entrance... Something very common in Scandinavia.
We quickly prepared our bed. Something I normally would not mention, but you will find out why further on. The hostel had a small kitchen for everybody to use, so we decided to start cooking and recover from both our trips to Stockholm.
| 3rd of January | Stockholm |
Sweden |
After having enjoyed our pasta meal, we decided it was time for our 'night out in Stockholm'. Back in my room, I was to discover that my bed apperently seemed very comfortable to another, rather large, guest of the hostel.
It took a while for him to understand that he had to make his own bed, instead of sleeping in mine, but at the end everything was solved..
Although it was evening, we were still able to get a first impression of the city and some of the Islands. I had visited Stockholm once before, but it was great to see it in winter time! Half of the water was frozen and it suddenly was possible create several shortcuts to the other island.
Looking at my friend, the river was not all that was frozen. Apparently his eyebrows were not used to cope with a temperature of -12! After an hour we headed for the nearest bar. Here we drank a beer and slowly started to feel human again. Arriving back at the hostel, I was happy to see that my bed was empty! |

| 7th of January | Bergen |
Norway |
While climbing the hill, we took several pictures. I know I've already mentioned it, but Bergen is a great place. If you intend to shoot many pictures however, I'd advise you to buy your films elsewhere... We discovered that they are about 3 times as expensive as in the Netherlands |

For those of you who intend to visit Bergen, but dislike climbing, there is a small lift, taking you to the top in just under 5 minutes.
After reaching the top, we walked around in the forest. There are several walking trails, which are also used for 'Langlauffen', or is it the other way around? Well, anyway we enjoyed it. Afterwards we returned to the station, where we had our dinner. While enjoying our plate of paste, we both agreed that this was the best day so far. |
After washing the dishes we waited for our train, that would take us back to Oslo, where we would switch trains early in the morning, to head for Gothenburg. |

Before boarding an international or night train, be sure to check for any extra reservation charges at the train station! These fees are obligatory, and must officially be paid in advance.
In Scandinavia, everybody has a reserved seat. If you pay these charges, you can be sure that no-one claims the seat that you are sitting in, half way your (nightly) journey. The prices are about 5 euros per trip
We woke up around 9 o'clock. After having prepared our breakfast, we entered the living room of the hostel, and there he was... The hotel guest, that had tried to take over my bed, was now (still) sitting in front of the television, a sleep! Maybe he hadn't understood my remarks after all... After having asked the girl at the reception to guard our backpacks, we left for the center of Stockholm. Trust me, it is even nicer with daylight! We watched the changing of the guards at the royal palace... It was far more impressive to see, than the one in front of Buckingham Palace. We later on found out that apparently, the Swedish deliberately tried to out perform the Brits, not only the guards did a better job, but the Royal Palace contains exactly one room more than Buckingham palace!
That day, we visited the city center, the local McDonalds and the Tampere University (to check our email). In the evening we first enjoyed the sauna, the Finnish beer and we had our first big meal in about 10 days. We originally planned to go for a beer in the city center, but instead went to bed early. We intended to make a walk over one of the lakes, the next day.
Well, let's say that we considered three hours to be more than enough! We both agreed that there was not that much to see, at least not in, or just outside the city center. Okay, we've only been there for 3 hours, so maybe we shouldn't judge so quickly... But when I contacted my Finish friend, to ask her why Gothenburg was so great, she told us: 'Well, it has such a nice shopping mall, completely indoor!' I guess I should have asked more beforehand...
Finally, it was time for our first train! We planned to take the night train from Stockholm (21:35) to Trondheim, Norway (11.30). To be honest, this was about the only train that we took according to our original schedule!
Oslo; again a beautiful city! (and again -17 degrees). We arrived early in the morning and had breakfast at the central station. Afterwards, we got ourselves a map and crossed Oslo, partly to see as much as we could, partly just to keep warm!
We seriously thought of asking the bartender if we could pay the beer in terms, because of the alcohol prices!
===>
The food tasted fine, and while enjoying our pasta, we decided not to head for Bodo, since that was even more up north (located above the Arctic circle). Instead we decided to head for Oslo! Luckily the train was warm. We had a beer, played backgammon, and almost thought everything was perfect, until a passenger with a dog showed up. The dog managed to wake everybody about every two hours. |
